Today is the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, known to most people as The Dambuster's raid. It was the night of 16/17 May 1943 that 19 Lancasters took off for a daring low level mission over Germany that resulted in the destruction of the Mohne and Eder dams although, sadly, it cost the lives of 53 RAF aircrew. We remember their bravery.
I've followed their footsteps to a degree over the years from staying in the former officer's mess at Pettwood some 20 years ago to going up in a Lanc, visiting the training area at Derwent, visiting the dams and paying respects to the fallen at their graves in Germany. What ever your views on the benefits of the mission you have to admire the aircrews involved.
