RAF Friston

AviationPosted by Peter Smith Sat, May 05, 2018 23:44:23

A little along the coast from Beachy Head is RAF Friston. There is really nothing there now to indicate that this used to be an airfield but if you stop on the A295 there are a couple of footpaths that will take you through fields to a memorial stone on the end of one of the grass runways, of which there were two. Although aircraft were based at Friston from time to time its main purpose was as an emergency landing ground. It saw little action after D-Day and closed in 1946 although it was briefly revived in 1988 as it was the setting for the TV series Piece of Cake.
